Sweden: senior diplomat arrested on suspicion of espionage
Swedish authorities have arrested a senior diplomat suspected of espionage. The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) confirmed the arrest, saying the diplomat is believed to have passed sensitive information to a foreign power over an extended period.
The arrest, which took place earlier this week, comes amid growing concerns in Sweden over foreign intelligence activities targeting the country's political and security institutions. Säpo stated that the investigation is ongoing and that the diplomat, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, is being held in custody as prosecutors prepare charges.
In an unusual development, the investigation is also examining possible links between the diplomat's arrest and the sudden resignation of Sweden's National Security Adviser last week. The adviser, Henrik Landerholm, stepped down citing "personal reasons," but the timing has raised questions inside Sweden's political and security circles.
Säpo declined to comment on the connection but confirmed that the agency is exploring "all possible angles" and that no scenario is being ruled out at this stage.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Swedish Foreign Ministry, which is reportedly cooperating fully with the investigation. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's office said in a brief statement that the government views the allegations "with utmost seriousness" and is committed to safeguarding Sweden’s national security.
This case is the latest in a string of espionage-related incidents in Scandinavia in recent months, reflecting heightened tensions with Russia and other foreign actors amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and Sweden's pending NATO membership.
Authorities emphasized that the legal process is still in its early stages and urged the public not to jump to conclusions until all facts are verified.
