Anger in the government of Turkish President Erdogan after the opposition declared Wednesday a "no shopping day." This step was taken in protest of the arrest of students who participated in protests against the authorities.
This is an escalation of the steps by the opposition, which initially called for a boycott of businesses associated with Erdogan but today declared a total boycott. There are reports from Turkey of businesses that closed their doors today in solidarity with the opposition.
Erdogan's aides claim that what is happening on Wednesday is "economic sabotage." Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bulat said that the boycott calls pose a threat to economic stability. "These are attempts to sabotage the economy and contain elements of unfair trade and competition.
We see this as a futile attempt by circles that see themselves as the masters of this country," Bulat said.
