The Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that leaders of Palestinian factions based outside the territories have tightened their security measures following Israeli threats to eliminate Hamas leaders abroad. This includes senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad figures residing in Cairo.
IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir warned two days ago, after the elimination of Hamas’s military spokesman Abu Obeida, that “our hand is still extended,” adding, “Most of Hamas’s members abroad – we will reach them as well.”
According to an Egyptian source, Cairo has warned Israel not to target Islamic Jihad Secretary-General Ziyad al-Nakhalah, who resides almost permanently in the Egyptian capital. Egypt, as part of its mediation role in Gaza ceasefire talks, recently granted him semi-permanent residence in the country.
The report notes that Hamas leaders who frequently meet with Egyptian intelligence are also at risk, with some moving their residences from Lebanon due to what they called “repeated Israeli violations of the ceasefire.”
