Iran’s expanding missile and drone campaign has left many observers asking a basic question: Why would Tehran attack its own Arab neighbors — including states it has long coordinated with?
Ruhollah Khomeini, the architect of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, provided the ideological blueprint decades ago.
Khomeini made clear that the revolution was never about borders or nationalism. In his own words:
“We do not worship Iran, we worship Allah. For patriotism is another name for paganism. I say let this land [Iran] burn. I say let this land go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant in the rest of the world.”
