Khaled Meshaal was indicted by the US Justice Department (DOJ) for, among other things, terrorism and murder conspiracy. He has yet to face justice and remains free in Qatar.
The charges, unsealed on September 3, 2024, included those relating to his central role, together with the other defendants, in planning, supporting and perpetrating the October 7th atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists, who were led by Meshaal and his fellow defendants. The Attorney General at the time, Merrick Garland, stated nearly 1,200 people, including over 40 Americans were murdered and hundreds of others were kidnapped. It should be noted that the kidnapped also included Americans, who were held hostage. Many of those hostages were murdered, including American Hersh Goldberg-Polin Z"L and HY"D.
Qatar does not have an extradition treaty with the US, which is surprising, given the presence of a US base in Qatar and the existing defense and security partnership with the US. However, given the foregoing, it is shocking that Qatar has not voluntarily turned over Meshaal to US custody.
