As part of the lessons learned from October 7, the Israel Air Force is quietly establishing a new commando-style intervention unit designed to provide an immediate response to terrorist infiltration, raids and attacks on air force bases.
The new unit, named “Arad,” will be made up entirely of female combat soldiers and is expected to meet some of the highest combat standards in the air force.
The unit was created after the air force concluded that it needs a dedicated, fast-response ground force capable of confronting extreme security scenarios inside or near its bases. October 7 investigations revealed that some Hamas Nukhba terrorists had planned to reach air force bases, including Hatzerim and Tel Nof. Maps of air force bases were reportedly found on some terrorist cells.
Israel’s air force bases are considered strategic national assets, and protecting them is essential for maintaining the air force’s operational continuity at all times and under all conditions.
