US Central Command announced that it has, for the first time, launched a loitering “kamikaze” attack drone directly from a US Navy warship operating in the Middle East.
According to the statement, the launch took place earlier this week as part of operational activity in the region.
The drone, designed to loiter over an area and strike targets with precision, represents a significant expansion of US naval strike capabilities, allowing warships to carry out flexible, low-cost precision attacks without relying solely on aircraft or missiles.
The move reflects ongoing US efforts to adapt its military posture in the Middle East amid rising regional tensions, including threats to maritime routes, US forces, and allies. Loitering munitions provide commanders with greater situational awareness and rapid strike options, particularly in contested environments where response time is critical.
