Lebanon is again approaching a dangerous breaking point, with growing concern that Hezbollah may try to tighten its grip on Beirut as political, military and public pressure against the terror organization increases.
According to the report, the fear is based on several developments: Lebanon’s political collapse, Israel’s increasing military pressure, and Hezbollah’s attempt to preserve its power by strengthening its presence inside the capital.
The central issue is Hezbollah’s weapons. Talks between Israel and the Lebanese government, together with growing international pressure, have raised the possibility of a roadmap that would eventually force Hezbollah to disarm. For Hezbollah, this is not a political issue — it is an existential threat.
The report says Hezbollah may see a violent takeover of key state institutions in Beirut as a way to “break the rules” and block any arrangement that weakens it.
