A report in Israelis daily "Ynet" says that a new historical study has uncovered the identity of the Nazi officer in one of the Holocaust’s most haunting images, known as “The Last Jew of Vinnytsia.”
German historian research has determined that the officer was Jacobus Onnen, a German schoolteacher who became an SS officer and carried out executions of Jews in Berdychiv, Ukraine, in July 1941.
The infamous photograph, first shown at the Eichmann trial, captures the execution of an unidentified Jewish man at the edge of a mass grave. Behind him stands Onnen, pistol in hand, preparing to shoot, while SS soldiers look on.
While the murderer has now been identified, the victim’s name remains unknown, symbolizing the countless lives erased during the Holocaust.
