President Donald Trump said Tuesday he will deploy National Guard troops to Chicago, calling the Democrat-led city a "hellhole" plagued by gun crime. Trump also suggested Baltimore could be next, insisting his plan is about saving lives, not politics.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker strongly rejected the move, accusing Trump of staging a “political invasion” and noting that murders in Chicago have fallen nearly 50% in the past four years.
The president, who previously sent troops to Washington and Los Angeles, defended the strategy, claiming it restored safety in the capital.
But a federal judge ruled Tuesday that Trump violated the law by using troops for police functions in Los Angeles, warning he risks creating a "national police force." The injunction takes effect Sept. 12, setting up a potential Supreme Court battle.
