Dr. Martin Sherman warns that President Trump’s shifting policies prove Israel must remain responsible for its own national security.
President Donald Trump remains one of the most important strategic assets available to Israel, but recent events have raised serious questions about the direction of his foreign policy, according to Dr. Martin Sherman.
Sherman argues that Trump repeatedly halted military campaigns before Israel and the US had secured decisive victories. The fighting was stopped too early in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, allowing weakened enemies time to recover and reorganize.
Iran, in particular, had been pushed toward possible collapse before Washington brought the campaign to an end. Sherman rejects the belief that an agreement with Tehran can permanently neutralize the threat. He argues that regime change alone may not be sufficient because Iran lacks a strong democratic tradition and could eventually return to Islamist rule.
