In the Independence War of 1948, the old city fell to the Jordanians who occupied it, ethnically cleansed the city of its Jews and destroyed all the synagogues. They did not allow Jews to pray.

19 years later, in 1967 - the IDF took back the eastern part of Jerusalem, and with it the old city and the Temple Mount.

Here is new footage where the battalion that captured the old city is arranged in order on the Temple Mount itself to honor this historic moment.
