In a landmark move toward historical transparency, Argentina has declassified over 1,850 documents detailing the post-World War II refuge provided to Nazi war criminals.
This initiative, spearheaded by President Javier Milei, fulfills a commitment to unveil the nation's past complicity in sheltering figures such as Josef Mengele and Adolf Eichmann.
Unveiling a Hidden History
The newly accessible records comprise police files, intelligence reports, and press clippings, now available through the National General Archive's online platform. These documents shed light on how high-ranking Nazis evaded justice by adopting new identities and integrating into Argentine society. For instance, Mengele, infamously known as the "Angel of Death," entered Argentina in 1949 under the alias Helmut Gregor and later resumed using his real name.
