President Donald Trump announced that the United States will launch powerful strikes against Iran tonight, declaring that Tehran’s navy, air force, radar systems, air defenses and most offensive capabilities have already been destroyed.
Trump also said that, in the “not too distant future,” the US intends to take Kharg Island and other key oil infrastructure sites, giving Washington control over Iran’s oil and gas markets.
Kharg Island is the central hub of Iran’s oil-export system and has previously been targeted by US forces, while its energy infrastructure was largely spared. Taking control of the island would represent a major escalation and could deprive the Islamic regime of one of its most important remaining sources of revenue.
