Mexican federal authorities have uncovered a major underground tunnel near the US border, raising fresh concerns about cross-border smuggling networks operating between Tijuana and San Diego.
The tunnel was discovered during a raid in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood. Investigators said the hidden passage stretched roughly 265 meters and was about 6.4 meters below ground, making it one of the most significant tunnel discoveries in the area in recent years.
According to officials, the tunnel had wooden walls and appeared to have been built in the direction of the US border. During the search, authorities found evidence suggesting that the property may have been used as a logistical hub for criminal activity, including the storage and movement of drugs, weapons and explosives. The site and seized materials were transferred to Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office, which is continuing the investigation.
