According to CBS, a Pentagon task force played a role in the operation that led to the elimination of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The report states that the specialized unit from the United States Department of Defense provided operational support as part of broader US-Mexico security coordination. Details surrounding the exact nature of the Pentagon’s involvement remain limited, but the development signals a significant escalation in direct US engagement against one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organizations.
El Mencho had long been considered one of the most wanted drug lords in the world, accused of overseeing large-scale fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking operations into the US, as well as orchestrating extreme violence inside Mexico. The CJNG has been designated by US authorities as one of the most dangerous transnational criminal organizations operating today.
If confirmed in full, Pentagon involvement would mark a major milestone in cross-border counter-cartel efforts and could reshape security cooperation between Washington and Mexico in the months ahead.
