US and Israeli officials revealed that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards planned to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Nieger, but the plot was thwarted this summer. Mexican authorities, however, claim they were unaware of the plan or its disruption.
Axios reported that the operation was orchestrated by “Unit 11000” of the Quds Force — the same group recently linked to attempted attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets in Europe and Australia. According to American sources, the mission began in late 2024 and continued through the first half of 2025, with the ambassador as the direct target.
Iran’s embassy in Mexico denied the accusations on X, calling them “fabricated lies aimed at damaging the historic friendship between Iran and Mexico.” Mexican defense and foreign ministries also said they had “no information” about any assassination attempt, while Israel’s embassy declined to comment.
Sources told Axios that the operative in charge was an Iranian agent formerly stationed at Tehran’s embassy in Venezuela, where he recruited and managed agents across Latin America before returning to Iran. US officials confirmed to AFP and Reuters that the “project is no longer active.”
