President Donald Trump visited three key Gulf states—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar—but the results may fall short of expectations.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE are deeply concerned about a potential U.S.-Iran agreement that could allow Tehran to advance its nuclear program. There is still no clear mutual defense pact between Washington and Riyadh, and the U.S. has not approved Saudi Arabia's own ambitions for nuclear energy.
Qatar, on the other hand, is focused on ending the war on Hamas and supports a U.S.-Iran agreement that would stabilize the nuclear issue.
Given these differing goals and uncertainties, it is far from certain that Trump will be satisfied with the financial commitments these Gulf nations are willing to make toward investment in the U.S.
