The goal of this innovative project is to reduce prices on basic food products
Israel’s Ministry of Economy and Industry launched the “Israel Basket” project, which it called a “competitive process between food chains to reduce the prices of basic products for the public.”
Mozzarella, Safed, Napoleon cheese, butter, cottage cheese, almonds, paper towels, diapers, wipes, baby food, bread, rice, pasta, coffee, chocolate, cornflakes, mayonnaise, ketchup, tuna, olive oil, basil, Bamba and Tirosh are just some of the 100 products included in the project.
As part of the project, the ministry is leading an open competitive process among national retail chains, in which one chain will be selected to commit to the lowest price for a basket of 100 best-selling products in Israel. The winning chain will commit to selling the basket of products to the public at the discounted price it committed to over a period of six months, with the possibility of an extension for another six months, and will be accompanied by a large-scale public campaign led by the state.
