He thought he was selling radioactive materials to an Iranian general - and got caught.
An extraordinary story from East Asia - a senior Yakuza (Japanese crime organization) named Takashi Ebisawa ran a network from Myanmar for trafficking drugs, weapons, and... radioactive materials
In 2020, Avisawa got his hands on uranium and plutonium (used to make nuclear weapons) and began looking for buyers. The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which had been following Avisawa for several years, "jumped on the deal" and DEA agents posed as an Iranian general and contacted Avisawa.
Over a two-year period, Avisawa sent agents photos of the nuclear materials and, in 2022, also sent them a small sample. American authorities tested the sample and determined that it was enriched enough to create a nuclear weapon .
