Lebanese writer and activist Imad Koumayha says growing numbers of Shiites in Lebanon now view Iran’s regime as disloyal, immoral and willing to use them as cannon fodder.
Speaking in an online interview, Koumayha said many Lebanese Shiites once believed they shared a deep bond with Iran’s Shiites. The war, destruction and displacement, however, have convinced some that Tehran exploits their community while pursuing its own regional ambitions.
Koumayha, whose home in southern Lebanon was destroyed, said anger among displaced Shiites has become so intense that some have renounced Islam altogether. He also accused Hezbollah’s society of forcing people to hide their suffering and pretend that sacrifice brings happiness.
According to Koumayha, even parents who lose children are expected to appear on television and claim they are proud and happy. He said such statements are neither natural nor honest, but reflect the pressure placed on Shiites to conceal grief and avoid appearing weak before Israel.
