Sources revealed that the head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, assured Saudi authorities that all steps related to establishing foreign military bases along the Red Sea have been frozen, including the proposed Russian naval base in Port Sudan.
This position follows international reports claiming Sudan had offered to host Russia’s first naval base in Africa in 25 years. A military source denied the reports, stressing that what is circulating is “not accurate at this stage.”
According to the source, the project is based on an agreement signed in 2017, which later underwent multiple reviews and came under heavy international pressure, as reported by Sudan Tribune. These pressures ultimately prevented the project from moving forward.
Sources confirmed that al-Burhan reiterated this stance during his mid-month meeting in Riyadh with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where he pledged to take new steps aimed at creating a favorable atmosphere for the next phase and working to halt Sudan’s ongoing war.
