Although the drilling carried out last year in the Lebanese gas field, after the agreement with Israel on the issue of the maritime border, did not produce anything, Lebanon is not giving up on the dream of becoming a gas-producing country.
The authorities in Lebanon have published international tenders for the granting of concessions for gas and oil exploration in blocks 1-10, excluding of course block 9, which was in dispute with Israel and is in the concession of the French company Total, the Italian ENI and Qatar Energy.
The tenders show the deterioration of relations between Lebanon and the French-Italian-Qatari consortium since it had the concession for blocks 8 and 10 but it gave them up.
Also, this consortium did not publish a report on what the findings were in the drilling, nor does it undertake to conduct additional drilling.
In short, the tenders issued by Lebanon now appear to be a step of desperation. Will this lead to the discovery of gas in the sea off the coast of Lebanon? The chances don't seem very high.
