The recent visit to Beirut by the Iranian official Ali Larijani continues to stir controversy in Lebanon.
According to media reports, Larijani, who serves as Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, smuggled through Rafic Hariri Airport a sum of 300 million dollars in cash for Hezbollah.
However, sources in the Lebanese presidential palace denied these claims. According to those sources, the Iranian plane and entourage were checked “person by person,” and Larijani was allowed to bring in only a diplomatic bag weighing about 10 kg that was not inspected. They added: "1 million dollars in 100-dollar bills weighs about 15 kg, so how do 300 million fit into a 10 kg bag?"
What further fueled speculation about the funds from Iran to Lebanon were the words of the Iranian ambassador, Mojtaba Amani, who gave an interview to the LBCI channel. Regarding the money, he said that Iran tried to transfer 60 million dollars and oil “from the Iranian people to the Lebanese people,” but the government in Beirut refuses to officially accept it due to sanctions.
