Tensions in Iran are rising due to a severe water crisis, worsened by an extreme heatwave in recent weeks. Reservoir levels have dropped to their lowest in a century, causing power outages and sparking public protests.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned last week that without immediate action, the situation could become irreversible. On August 11, he said the country’s water reserves could run out within days, forcing authorities to cut off supply entirely.
Security sources say the crisis stems not only from weather conditions but also from poor management, corruption, and inconsistent water policies of past governments—particularly regarding dams and supply systems. Tehran’s outdated infrastructure causes significant water loss before it reaches homes.
The crisis has deepened public frustration, as basic needs like water and electricity are disrupted while Iran struggles to recover from the war with Israel.
