Even after the border crossing reopened in both directions, Hamas interference prevented some Gazans from exiting the Strip.
Although the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt was reopened this week for movement in both directions, Hamas intervened and effectively prevented some of the Gazans who had been approved to leave the Strip from doing so.
According to reports, Hamas operatives on the Gaza side of the crossing obstructed the departures of certain individuals, despite prior coordination and permission for their exit. The incident highlights Hamas’s continued control over civilian movement inside Gaza, even when external crossings are formally opened.
The Rafah crossing, Gaza’s main gateway not controlled by Israel, is often presented by Hamas as proof that Gazans can move freely when Israel is not involved. However, the latest developments suggest that internal Hamas decisions and interests continue to play a decisive role in determining who is allowed to leave the Strip.
