British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce his resignation on Monday and present an orderly timetable for leaving office, according to a report in Britain’s Observer.
The report says Starmer has lost decisive support inside the Labour Party after months of declining popularity, policy reversals and growing internal pressure.
The leading contender to replace him is Andy Burnham, who recently returned to Parliament and is now seen by many Labour MPs as the party’s strongest alternative.
Burnham is considered part of Labour’s “soft left”: somewhat to Starmer’s left, supportive of recognizing a Palestinian state, but not identified with the party’s radical wing. On Gaza, he has criticized Hamas terrorism while refusing to describe Israel’s war against Hamas as “genocide.”
