Student demonstrations were held Saturday in a large number of cities across Iran, in what appeared to be a broader and more organized wave of protest than similar attempts seen in recent days.
The official reason for the demonstrations was opposition to changes in university examination conditions. However, protests were reported in Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad, Khorramabad, Yasuj, Shiraz, Arak, Kermanshah, Tabriz and Karaj — indicating that the movement extended well beyond a single university or region.
There had been several local attempts in recent days to organize strikes and demonstrations over the issue, but they remained limited. Saturday’s protests appeared different: larger, more coordinated and spread across numerous major cities.
Iranian students have historically been among the most active and confrontational sectors in protests against the regime. Even demonstrations that begin over academic or economic grievances can quickly expand into broader opposition to government repression, corruption and the Islamic Republic itself.
