The martyrdom idea sits at the heart of the Iranian-backed Islamist network that has shaped Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and Shiite militias across Iraq and Syria.
Hamas did not become what it is today without the massive material and ideological support of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Despite the Sunni-Shiite divide, Tehran helped turn Gaza into a battlefield built around sacrifice, death and permanent war.
