Iran has reportedly instructed the Houthis to prepare to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait if negotiations with the United States collapse, potentially triggering a global energy and shipping crisis.
The strategic waterway carries roughly 10% of global maritime trade and has become increasingly important as an alternative route for Saudi oil exports.
A simultaneous disruption of the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz could severely restrict energy supplies, drive oil prices sharply higher and force commercial vessels to take the longer route around Africa.
According to the report, the Houthis have received new Iranian-supplied anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles and explosive drones. They are also allegedly preparing naval mines, unmanned underwater vehicles and commando units capable of raiding commercial ships.
