Internal rift widens: Druze militia commander in southern Syria killed by forces loyal to Suwayda’s spiritual leader for “ties with the Golani regime and opposing relations with Israel”
The internal war among Druze militias in southern Syria has escalated dramatically.
It is well known that the spiritual leader of the Druze in Suwayda—often referred to as the “Mountain of the Druze”—does not enjoy full support among his own community. Several armed Druze factions oppose both his methods and his push for closer ties with Israel and for establishing autonomous rule across southern Syria up to the Golan border. These factions maintain strong connections with forces loyal to Syrian President al-Sharaa and follow their orders.
Until now, the conflict was largely political and religious. But in recent days it has escalated sharply, risking a full-scale Druze civil war.
