For decades, the main threat in the United States was the spreading of communism beyond the Iron Curtain of Eastern Europe. 

The United States adopted the idea of containment and fought several costly wars in Korea and Vietnam in order to ensure that Communism did not spread to Southeast Asia. 

But Communism continued to spread towards Cuba, parts of Africa, and also spread it’s tentacles into the Middle East.
