Following the Hamas attack on October 7, Israel significantly expanded the use of artificial intelligence in large-scale military operations.
After Hamas’s October 7 massacre, the Israel Defense Forces accelerated the integration of AI technologies into combat and intelligence activity.
According to foreign sources, AI-supported systems were used in targeted killings of senior Hamas commanders and in hostage-recovery efforts. These tools included facial-recognition systems capable of identifying partially concealed faces, voice-analysis technologies to locate targets, and advanced NLP tools to scan, translate, and analyze Arabic-language posts, messages, and open-source data at scale.
Israeli officials said the decision to deploy AI on the battlefield was taken after October 7, when more than 1,200 Israelis were murdered. They also noted close cooperation between Unit 8200 and reserve soldiers developing AI capabilities in a facility known as “the Studio.”
