Hundreds of former Colombian soldiers were enticed to travel to Sudan with promises of generous salaries funded by the United Arab Emirates. What many found instead was death in a distant war marked by mass killings, rape, famine, and the recruitment of children.
An investigation by AFP reveals how Colombian mercenaries ended up on the other side of the world through a network of profit and silence stretching from the Andes to Darfur.
Using interviews with families and mercenaries, corporate records, and geolocation of battlefield footage, AFP uncovered how these fighters bolstered the ranks of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been accused of genocide.
