During the signing ceremony, Mamdani quoted directly from the Quran and called on New Yorkers to look to Islam and the Prophet Mohammed for moral guidance. The remarks were delivered from an official government podium and framed as part of the city’s justification for expanding sanctuary-style policies.
The video sparked sharp criticism, with opponents arguing that the mayor is using religious doctrine to legitimize policies that undermine federal law.
