US intelligence officials have determined that Cuba has acquired more than 300 military drones and has reportedly discussed potential attack scenarios targeting the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, American naval vessels, and even Key West, Florida — just 90 miles from Havana.
According to classified intelligence shared with Axios, the concern is not only the number of drones involved, but the possibility that Cuba could coordinate asymmetric attacks close to US territory. Officials are reportedly examining whether foreign adversaries, including Iran, China, or Russia, may have helped supply or support the drone program.
The report comes amid growing concerns in Washington about hostile states using low-cost drone warfare to threaten US military infrastructure and civilian areas. Guantanamo Bay remains one of the most strategically sensitive US bases in the Western Hemisphere, while Key West sits near critical maritime routes and military facilities.
The intelligence assessment is expected to intensify pressure on the US administration to strengthen homeland and coastal defense systems against drone threats emerging much closer to American shores than previously anticipated.
