Large parts of the course of the river in Syria and Iraq appear dry to the point that the bottom of the river becomes visible and in parts of it the regular flow gives way to puddles.
The photos are from Deir ez-Zor in Syria and this is before summer even arrived.
What causes this? Dams built by Turkey on the river cause it to store 55% of its waters. Syria also has a Tabaka dam that stores its waters in Lake Al-Assad and utilizes its tributaries, including the Khabour, for agriculture and drinking.
In addition, for several years there has been a drought in central and eastern Syria.
NEWSRAEL: It should be noted that there is virtually NOTHING being done in Middle Eastern countries to conserve water or to find solutions that may cause huge loss of life in the near future.
