A Lebanese Sunni cleric says Iran and Hezbollah have slaughtered more Sunnis than were killed in Gaza.
Lebanese Sunni Islamic scholar Sheikh Hassan Moraib said in a February 8, 2026 interview on Channel 9 (Turkey) that the slaughter of Sunnis carried out by Hezbollah, with the support, participation, and weapons of Iran, is no less criminal than what he described as the “Israeli massacre” in Gaza.
He argued that the number of people killed by the Iranian regime and its “stupid” proxies exceeds the number of those killed in Gaza, accusing Tehran and Hezbollah of waging devastating campaigns across the region that have claimed countless Sunni lives. Moraib’s remarks reflect deepening Sunni anger toward Iran’s regional role and its backing of armed groups operating in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and beyond.
In his comments, Moraib framed the issue as a broader intra-Muslim conflict, asserting that sectarian violence fueled by Iran and its allied organizations has torn apart societies and destabilized entire countries. His criticism highlights growing public debate within parts of the Arab and Sunni world over Hezbollah’s actions and Tehran’s regional strategy.
