Time Magazine published today an interview with U.S. President Donald Trump, marking the first 100 days of his second term. The interview, conducted last Tuesday, covered topics like the Middle East, Iran’s nuclear program, and the war in Ukraine
Regarding Iran, Trump said he is open to meeting with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei or President Masoud Pezeshkian. On reaching a nuclear deal with Iran, he stated: "I believe we will make a deal with Iran. No one else could have done it."
Asked if he had stopped an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump replied: "No, that's not true. I didn’t stop them. But I didn’t make it easy either because I believe we can make a deal without an attack. I hope so. We might have to strike to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. I didn’t make it easy, but I didn’t say no."
When asked if he feared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might drag him into war, Trump answered: "I'm not worried about that. He might go to war, but we won’t be dragged into it." He added that if no deal is reached, he would willingly lead military action.
On a possible normalization deal with Saudi Arabia, Trump said: "I think Saudi Arabia will join the Abraham Accords fully and very soon. The Biden administration did nothing. It will happen."
Regarding Russia and Ukraine, Trump claimed Crimea would remain with Russia, saying: "Zelensky understands that, and everyone knows it's been theirs for a long time. This is Obama's war – a war that should never have happened." Trump insisted Crimea wouldn’t have been taken if he were president then and expressed optimism about reaching a peace deal, while asserting Ukraine should "never" join NATO.
Trump also addressed U.S. campus protests, emphasizing that he supports free speech but not violent unrest. He said, "There’s massive antisemitism at every protest. I support free speech, but not riots." Asked if he worries about chilling free speech, he said, "They can protest, but they can't destroy schools like they did at Columbia."
