Trump says Americans may soon pay no income tax as White House studies tariff-based system
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Americans may “not even have income tax to pay” in the coming years, suggesting his administration is exploring the most dramatic tax overhaul in modern US history. Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, the president said tariff-driven revenue could eventually replace the federal income tax entirely.
Trump argued that government revenue under his leadership has become “so great… so enormous” that the income tax could either be eliminated or reduced to a symbolic level. He said that whether it is removed or kept at a much lower rate, Americans “won’t be paying income tax.”
Earlier in his second administration, the president proposed eliminating income tax for individuals earning under 150,000 dollars, with tariffs used as the replacement. Trump says tariffs are a way to shift the tax burden onto foreign producers rather than American workers.
