The Pentagon has awarded Lockheed Martin Space a contract exceeding $1 billion to advance the U.S. military's Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program.
This initiative aims to develop a non-nuclear, precision-guided hypersonic weapon capable of striking any target globally within an hour. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2028.
The CPS system employs a two-stage solid rocket booster coupled with a Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB) that carries a kinetic energy warhead. This configuration allows the missile to achieve speeds exceeding Mach 5, enabling rapid response to emerging threats.
The C-HGB is a collaborative development between the U.S. Navy and Army, with Dynetics responsible for its construction and Lockheed Martin overseeing the booster and overall system integration.
