A new Israeli defense system aims to answer one of the most difficult battlefield threats: fiber-optic drones that cannot be jammed electronically.
Israel Shipyards has unveiled a new subsidiary, AREONOUS, which has developed a drone-interception system designed to defend bases, airports, naval platforms, and maneuvering forces in the field.
The company says the system can operate at different ranges — from long-range protection of strategic sites to a portable 13-kilogram version carried by soldiers. The system uses sensors, radar, cameras, and an interceptor mechanism that can launch nets from the ground, trapping hostile drones and bringing them down.
The key point is the threat: fiber-optic drones are extremely difficult to stop because they do not depend on radio signals that can be disrupted by electronic warfare. This makes physical interception increasingly important, especially after the lessons learned from Hezbollah’s use of drones and the broader battlefield experience in Ukraine.
