After Israelโs long-range airstrikes in Iran, the U.S. Air Force adopts Israeli strategy of using drop tanks on F-35s
Following the stunning performance of the Israeli Air Force during the 12-day war with Iran — reportedly conducting 1,500 strike sorties — the U.S. Air Force is now working to equip its F-35s with external fuel tanks to extend their operational range.
This move is part of the broader “Block 4” modernization program, which includes upgrades like advanced radar, infrared targeting, electronic warfare enhancements, and new classified weaponry.
According to the Israeli Air Force, its tanker squadron conducted about 600 refueling flights during the conflict. Given the distances involved, Israeli jets likely used both American tankers and detachable fuel tanks to reach targets deep inside Iran and return safely.
