The "Wattan" Arabic website reports on the publication of the Institute for Social and Economic Policy regarding the results of a study on the subject of marriage of Palestinian minors, during a workshop that was held simultaneously in Ramallah and Gaza.
The workshop shed light on the phenomenon of underage marriages and the rise of divorce in Palestinian society, which contributes to increasing the economic and social exclusion of children and women.
Despite a law enacted in 2019 that defined the permissible marriage age at 18, 10,486 minors were married due to various types of exclusions. 97% of marriages under the age of 18 are women.
The purpose of the research and the workshop that took place is to emphasize the need to limit the exceptions established in the legislation and to establish stricter standards for the marriage permit of minors.
