Kenya has taken delivery of Israel’s SPYDER air defense system, significantly enhancing the Kenyan Defense Forces’ ability to counter aerial threats ranging from aircraft to unmanned systems, according to sources familiar with the procurement.
The Python and DERBY (SPYDER) system is manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and was reportedly delivered in December 2025. The system is designed to intercept aircraft, drones, helicopters, and guided missiles, providing Kenya with a modern, mobile air defense capability.
Sources said the deal was finalized as part of a bilateral loan agreement backed by the Israeli government. The financing package is estimated at approximately 3.4 billion Kenyan shillings, or about $26 million. Negotiations were conducted in July 2025 during talks led by Kenyan President William Ruto.
SPYDER is known for its high mobility and rapid response, allowing it to detect and engage threats while on the move. It can track and engage multiple targets simultaneously, with an interception range of up to 100 kilometers, depending on configuration and missile type.
