The Middle East Eye website, which operates from Britain and is perceived to be affiliated with Qatar, reported that Arab and Muslim countries that the US administration is seeking to include in the international force in Gaza fear a "trap" that will force them to act to demilitarize Hamas by force.
YONI BEN MENACHEM -- The website reported that according to the draft of the American proposal intended for submission to the UN, which was obtained by the website, the international force is expected to be involved in the process of disarming Gaza, including "destroying and preventing the reconstruction of Hamas' military, terrorist and offensive infrastructures."
Egyptian officials told the website that Cairo is requesting a period of time for negotiations that will allow Hamas to hand over heavy weapons in a coordinated process, and does not intend to enter into direct confrontation with the organization.
One of the officials emphasized that "Egypt will not carry out the mission in which Israel 'failed'," adding that in Cairo's opinion, the disarmament process should include granting amnesty to Hamas fighters who surrender their weapons. The officials were quoted anonymously and the matter cannot be verified beyond the report.
