An interesting development in the European Union - Yesterday, the European Parliament approved in the budget vote a call to the Union Commission (the executive body) "to create a blacklist of civil society organizations that exploit the Union's funds".
So what exactly happened here? And will this affect the millions that the Union pours into organizations that work against Israel?
Members of parliament significantly intensified the criticism of money management in the Union mainly because of the Qatar-Gate affair, in which funds were transferred to organizations related to the government of Qatar. Added to this trigger was the criticism of funding for Palestinian organizations linked to terrorism
The Europeans began to understand that similar phenomena of the exploitation of money occurred in other regions where non-governmental organizations funded by the European Union operate. According to the wording, they demand to increase transparency, to perform a thorough inspection of each organization, to report to the parliament on the amounts, and to make sure that all projects are available for budget audit
As I recall, over the years the Union transfers tens of millions of Euros to Israeli, Palestinian, and international organizations under the heading of "human rights" - many times without a transparent procedure available to the public. Some of the organizations are linked to terrorist organizations, others persecute IDF soldiers and promote the demonization of Israel
Will the Commission adopt the Parliament's calls? It is impossible to know, because European politics is much more complex in the relationship between the authorities. But it seems that the parliament is also beginning to understand that there is a limit to the irresponsible dissipation of European taxpayers' money. Of course, until the next scandal.
