According to reports that came out today from Iran, explosions were also heard on Qeshm Island.
This is important because Qeshm is no longer just a point on the map - it is the largest island in the Persian Gulf, with an area of 1,491 sq km and only about 2 km away from the Iranian coast at the closest point.
Militarily, Qeshm Island sits right at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, meaning on one of the world's most important maritime bottlenecks.
In 2025, nearly 20 million barrels of crude oil per day passed through the strait - a quarter of the world's maritime oil trade and also about a fifth of the global trade in liquefied natural gas.
