Michigan-based Shi’ite Islamic scholar Saleh Qazwini claimed in a January 16, 2026 Friday sermon that the United States and Israel are deliberately fueling unrest in Iran in order to destabilize and overthrow the Iranian government.
Speaking at the Muslim Educational Community Center of America (MECCA) in Canton, Michigan, Qazwini argued that Iranian authorities do not benefit from killing protesters and suggested instead that foreign actors are responsible.
He implied that Donald Trump was involved, claiming that violence against protesters began immediately after Trump warned Tehran that killing demonstrators would trigger American involvement.
Qazwini asserted that US policy is driven by a desire to spread “chaos and division,” particularly in the Middle East, and accused Washington of acting primarily to protect what he described as its “baby Israel.”
