In recent months, the international community has pledged nearly $20 billion in support for Syria’s struggling economy.
These commitments include aid, grants, and investments. For example, the Brussels summit earlier this year pledged $6.5 billion, an international consortium led by a Qatari company committed $7 billion for solar energy projects, and just this week, Dubai Ports World signed an $800 million deal with the Syrian government.
These funds are crucial for the Assad regime, as about 90% of Syria’s population lives below the poverty line. The incoming money is expected to help stabilize the regime and expand its influence — including into the Druze stronghold of Jabal al-Druze.
But will reports of Druze being killed and abused stop the flow of funds into Syria? Unlikely. Even after the massacre on Syria’s coast, the international community continued to embrace the jihadist regime in Damascus. There is little reason to believe that will change now.
